5 Lab tests your doctor doesn’t check and should

  1. RBC Magnesium (RBC-red blood cell): Magnesium deficiency affects up to 50% of the population. It’s an easy lab check to see if you have optimal levels. Make sure to have the RBC Magnesium done, as this is more accurate.

  2. Vitamin D: Deficiency in Vitamin D affects a large percentage of the population. This is also a very easy blood test to check, and an easy deficiency to correct.

  3. Cholesterol particle size and concentration (NMR or Cardio IQ): This lab is a more in-depth picture of your cholesterol health. It calculates the size and concentration of the LDL/HDL particles which are more useful in assessing your cardiovascular health and insulin resistance.

  4. Fasting Insulin : Often times your fasting insulin can be high well before your fasting glucose or Hemoglobin A1c indicates a problem.

  5. Free T3 & Free T4 + Thyroid Antibodies (thyroid): Your doctor will often check only TSH and T4. These labs do not tell the whole story. T4 is the (mostly) inactive form of your thyroid hormone and is converted into the active form T3. Some people have trouble converting T4 to T3 and without checking this level, the assumption could be that your thyroid is normal. Additionally, most thyroid issues are autoimmune in nature; therefore, testing the thyroid antibodies is imperative.
